THEAUSSIEWORD.COM catches up with Modern Love Child.
How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?
I was 8 years old. I wanted to impress the girl who was living next door to me, I had a huge crush on her, so I wrote her a song and sang it for her. She gave me my first kiss, so I stuck with it.
What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?
Everything and anything beautiful and honest. What motivates me comes from something burning inside, I’m lucky that music really affects me the way it does.
What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist?
I want to be able to tour as much as possible. performing my music in front of people is my favorite thing in the world, next to surfing. If I can tour, and then write/surf/record, then tour, and repeat that, that will be my dream. I want to accomplish that.
What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour?
USA WEST COAST TOUR THIS SPRING!
Tell us a bit about your latest release and how would you best describe your music?
My songs are all come from REAL places. REAL people. Real stories.
Give us an insight into your creative process. What gets you writing songs?
Anything that makes me feel something strongly. Whenever I’m super sad, feeling like things arent working my way, I turn that into a song. If I’m with a girl who’s beautiful, and she’s making me feel something deep inside, I write about that. I’ve always been a dreamer, I’ve always been a romantic, and I’ve always wanted to make music my life. So I’m trying my best.
Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music?
Unfortunately, I have a hard time hiding anything. I can’t keep a secret. I’m an open book.
Success, what is the secret to it?
Haven’t had any yet, but I’ve been told persistence, so I’m not stopping till I’m popular enough to come tour in Australia.
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Touring with Houndmouth and Ben Kweller. I’m a HUGE fan of both artists. Truly a dream come true. Felt surreal.
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring?
Brandon Flowers, The Killers. INCREDIBLE
Are there any new projects in the pipeline?
Just releasing my debut album ‘MLC’, can’t wait!!!
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now?
WORLD TOUR. haha. But for real… A boy can dream…
What is your favourite and least favourite part about this line of work and why?
I love that everyone in this business is just like me, chasing down a childhood dream. Hardest part is just getting heard. But I won’t let that stop me.
Name a few of your favourite Australian artists.
I LOVE that band the Middle Kids SOOO good. I also met this girl Holiday Sidewinder when I was recording my album in London. She’s an Aussie, beautiful person.
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye?
It all helps. I’m happy to use any social media platform there is to get my songs out there. I even use Tinder to promote my music.
How do you plan on cracking the international market?
Gonna learn a bunch of different languages.
Do you collaborate with others? Who is on your wish-list?
I love writing with Ben Kweller, he is a true artist / songwriter. BRANDON FLOWERS from the Killers. #1. ALL TIME. I would cry.
What advice do you give for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t be afraid to create fake email addresses and email every record label, radio station, publishing house etc. That’s what I do. Still doing it.
A message for your fans. How do you best interact and respond with your fans?
I went on my first proper tour this past winter with Houndmouth and Ben Kweller. post tour there were a bunch of new MLC fans who hit me up on IG. I love EVERY single one. makes me feel so GOOD.
