SPECIAL INTERVIEW: John Adams

THEAUSSIEWORD.COM meets UK singer/songwriter John Adams.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?
Unfortunately music wasn’t a part of my childhood. I was very much raised with the motto “Get good grades and you’ll get a good job”, so all my focus was on education. I did well in school and it wasn’t until I became a Math’s teacher that I started to realise that a “good job” wasn’t the key to my happiness. As I slipped deeper into the 9 to 5 with less and less time to do what I enjoyed I became more and more disheartened. I’d always enjoyed music as a past time and I started busking for a break from my profession. The response I had to performing was so inspiring and quickly allowed me to resign. It felt like such a crazy gamble but I knew I needed a change. It was hard to give up on so many years of training but easy all that the same time. No regrets so far!

NEW MUSIC: Wang Chung – ‘Dance Hall Days’ Orchestral Version 2019

Wang Chung came out of the post-punk, New Wave scene in the UK going on to achieve global success, selling millions of records. Throughout their 35 year career they have released 6 albums and 2 Greatest Hits compilations. They have had 6 US Top 40 hits including a number 1 and other international smash hits including ‘Dance Hall Days’ and ‘Let’s Go’, and achieved cult status with their soundtrack for William Friedkin’s movie ‘To Live and Die in LA’, as well as their original song contribution to John Hughes’ legendary movie, The Breakfast Club. In the process of all of this (and somewhat unintentionally), Wang Chung became part of the contemporary culture of North America. Their huge smash ‘Everybody Have Fun Tonight’, with its now famous line ”Everybody Wang Chung Tonight” saw the invention of a new US verb: ”to Wang Chung”, the band being name-checked by everyone from Homer Simpson, Austin Powers, Two and a Half Men’s Charlie and Alan Harper, Top Gear’s James May and Richard Hammond, to Frasier Crane to name just a few. More recently their music has also featured in TV shows like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, South Park, Glee, This is Us, SNL and The Goldbergs, amongst many others…as well as in movies like Bumblebee, Deadpool and The Fighter. They have also featured in various huge video game titles like Grand Theft Auto:Vice City and in many big commercials.
Wang Chung return with an orchestral take on an all-time classic.

SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Calan Mai

THEAUSSIEWORD.COM catches up with Australian singer/songwriter Calan Mai.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

I always knew I wanted to be a writer. But when I was a kid I didn’t make the connection between music and writing: the idea that songs were constructed and could be about any subject matter. Once I began learning guitar at 13, it didn’t take long for me to start writing my own songs. The compulsion was always there, I just needed the musical knowledge. I’m drawn to songs because they are one of the most concise ways to tell a story.Continue reading

NEW MUSIC: Harrison Storm – ‘Run’

‘I was super excited to get to work with Sam Brumby and Anna Phillips on this clip. They’re two very talented humans. To have Jeremy Lindsay Taylor involved too was the cherry on top and really brought the clip to a whole new level.’  – Harrison Storm

Melbourne based singer songwriter – Harrison Storm releases the official video for his latest single ‘Run,’ with Australian actor Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (Sea Patrol, Puberty Blues, Heartbreak High) taking on the lead role.

Shot in the beautiful spot that is Stanwell Park and Coledale, NSW, the video follows the story of a man mourning with the loss of his father through flashbacks which feature fellow Australian actor Brendan Moar (Dry Spell Gardening – Foxtel, Coast Australia). The story is one of coming to terms with loss and looking to the future when things may seem bleak. Themes of loss and moving on are explored throughout.

Run was Directed and Produced by Anna Phillips & Jamie Croft with Sam Brumby looking after both Editing and acting as Director of Photography.

“When Harrison’s team came to me with this story it immediately bought the song to life for me. This story is about the aftermath of losing someone in your life that was the glue that held it all together. It’s about a family connection with the ocean, and the strong bond that a father and son share. Jeremy Lindsay Taylor delivers an honest, raw and captivating performance that is the perfect combination of strength and vulnerability.”  – Director Anna Phillips

‘Run’ has had strong momentum since its release on Feb 22nd with the track already gaining 300 thousand combined streams across Spotify & Apple Music.

Harrison is currently touring as the main support for Gregory Alan Isakov’s Australian tour.

SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Danielle Todd

THEAUSSIEWORD.COM special interview with Danielle Todd.

Give us an introduction. How did it all begin? What had you first interested in music?

Musical talent constantly surrounded me when I was a kid. It wasn’t unusual for me to go to bars to see my dad perform matinees with his country band in the early 90s, or go and see my cousin perform when I was a teenager. Throughout high school I started to book my own shows and made all my family and friends come out to see me. By the time I graduated high school I was a full-time touring musician. It wasn’t a question of whether or not I’d be a musician; it’s just what I made happen. It’s what I was born into.Continue reading
