THEAUSSIEWORD.COM catches up Aussie singer/songwriter Kaitlyn Thomas.
How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?
I started singing at the age of 8 years old, and when I saw the likes of Beccy Cole and the Sunny Cowgirls at the Whittlesea Country Music Festival in 2009 that I knew what I wanted to do. I knew right then that I wanted to be a country music artist and perform on stage. I happy to say that I’ve never looked back and I’m so thankful that I didn’t give up on my childhood dream.
What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?
I’m inspired by the incredible women within the music scene, these artists push me to challenge myself as a song writer and vocalist. Some of these incredible female artists include; Shania Twain, Sheryl Crow, Carrie Underwood, Suzi Quatro, Anne Wilson, Dolly Parton, The McClymonts, Hayley Jensen.
What are some of your biggest goals you hope to accomplish?
I would love to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, tour America and do music for the rest of my life. I love my job and I love that I able to do what I love every single day, and I can only hope that I can continue to what I love and make music that people resonate with.
What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour?
Over the past year and a half, I’ve been reflecting on who I want to be as an artist and what makes Kaitlyn Thomas different. I can say that I have now finally found my sound which is Country/Rock/Pop and producers who understand my sound and get me as an artist. So there will definitely be more music to come this year and the next. I have a handful of songs that are ready to be released into the world.
Tell us a bit about your latest release and how would you best describe your music?
‘Pretty Little Thing’ came about after being told I don’t fit the mould and what is typically expected as a female artist. I wanted to write about embracing who I am and female empowerment. ‘Pretty Little Thing’ is about breaking free from societal stereotypes and embracing one’s true self. My music and sound is a combination between country, rock, and pop.
Give us an insight into your creative process. What gets you writing songs?
I draw and write from my personal life experiences and what I’m going as a young woman in music and in today’s society. I have a journal full of song titles that I write in whenever I’m inspired. Inspiration is everywhere.
Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music?
I write from my personal experiences and what is happening in my life and the people around me. I write about what is important to me.
Success, what is the secret to it?
Success is a broad term. I think it is up to the individual to decide what success looks like. It varies and changes constantly. For me success is doing the job that I love every single day for the rest of my life.
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Highlights from my career so far include; Top 30 of this year’s Australian Idol, being an ambassador for anti-bullying organisation, Bully Zero since 2012, representing Australia at the World Championships of Performing Arts, and being endorsed by Maton guitars since 2016.
