theaussieword.com special interview with Aussie singer/songwriter Duncan Saige.
How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry? I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth so the butlers, servants and jesters at my parents massive estate would teach some little things on the piano and guitar. When Mum flew Tom Jones over for her 40th I really wanted to be in a band and play music.
What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? 2 main things. The love of creation and bringing something to life as well as the massive buzz it gives you when you perform it… And… to write better songs than some of the other crap that’s out there.
What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? Ask Liam Gallagher how he feels and for him to answer, “God-like”. And to continue to consistently release and play my music 🙂
What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour? About to play my first shows in Melbourne / Torquay! 🙂 I’m planning to put out more music in the coming months and hopefully an EP by the end of the year.
Tell us a bit about your latest release and how would you best describe your music? ‘Thoughts of You Without Me’ is a melodic love song. Some of the chords and melodies were written years ago until I rejigged the song and added a new chorus.
Give us an insight into your creative process. What gets you writing songs? Usually it starts off with noodling around on the guitar or piano before something that grabs me and comes out. It stems out from there. Lyrics commonly come last depending on what emotions the music evoke.
Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music? Be good to your family
Success, what is the secret to it? Eating Samboy Atomic Tomato chips
What has been your biggest career highlight so far? Playing at having my songs played on Triple J and Triple J unearthed, performing at Falls Festival 2018, and supporting the likes of Alex The Astronaut and Riley Pearce.
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? Donny Benet, Rod Stewart, Mark Gormley
Are there any new projects in the pipeline? Erotic films
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? Playing Oboe for the live orchestra of the Mr. Bean Musical
What is your favourite and least favourite part about this line of work and why? Favourite part – singing, using your body as an instrument. Worst part – clicky music industry people.
Name a few of your favourite Australian artists. Peter Combe, INXS, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Birds of Tokyo.
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? Good accessibility for consumers and plenty to choose from but there are too many robots out there now trying to make a quick buck.
How do you plan on cracking the international market? Fly to Indonesia and drink mushroom shakes until the answer comes to me and my business partners.
Do you collaborate with others? Who is on your wish-list? Yeah I have been exploring this idea more lately. I’m looking to try partner up with some poets and lyricists. I recently did a APRA workshop alongside another WA musoc, Bri Clark, which was great!
What advice do you give for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? Play good live shows and don’t give up !
A message for your fans. How do you best interact and respond with your fans? Come to my live shows and follow me on my socials
Any last words? Schping Sphpong Schpang
