New Music: Ryan Downey ‘Only Time’

A re-interpretation of the Enya staple, Only Time is the second single from Ryan Downey’s upcoming all-vocal mini LP Me & Her. Composed using only his own voice and body percussion, the Melbourne indie folk artist takes the song to an infectiously upbeat, yet emotionally resonating place, reflecting indications of his musical upbringing – The Traveling Wilburys, John Lennon and Paul Simon’s Graceland.

Me & Her was recorded over the summer of 2015 when Ryan broke his arm and was unable to play any instruments for 6 weeks. The first single Tidings was released in November, followed by a success residency at Melbourne’s Grace Darling Hotel. When premiering the video clip directed by Alex Badham (World’s End Press, Totally Mild, Oh Mercy), The Music wrote; ‘beguiling baritone vocals push and pull and float atop the instrumental tides, conspiring to deliver an enchanting, laid-back package of astonishing a cappella’.

Since releasing his debut EP Familiar Ground in 2013 (under the discontinued moniker Venice Music), Downey has developed a reputation for his powerful live solo show, regarded by Tonedeaf as ‘a performance that will leave you lost for words’. He has supported the likes of Luluc and John Murry (US) during their Australian tours and was selected to play at this year’s St Kilda Festival on the New Music stage. The full mini-LP, which was mixed by Anna Laverty (Nick Cave, Cut Copy, Meg Mac) and mastered by Ross Cockle (Sing Sing), will be released through Gaga Digi on March 22nd. It will feature two original tracks as well as a cappella covers of songs by the female songwriters Tiny Ruins, Joanna Newsom, Lhasa de Sela, Enya and The McGarrigle sisters.
