How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

It began really early for me, falling in love with acoustic songwriters as a teenager, but I never imagined I would become one myself at that time.  In my 20s I followed a career in geoscience whilst carry on with music in my spare time. I travelled a lot and that intrigue for the world eventually led to writing songs that weren’t totally awful! It wasn’t until my early 30s that I decided to commit to music as a profession and I have never looked back. It took me a while to have the confidence to take the plunge into my passion, but I have loved every second since.Continue reading

SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Joseph Eid

THEAUSSIEWORD.COM meets up with US singer/songwriter Joseph Eid.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

I was always writing poetry as a child and have kept a journal since the age of 6. There’s always been a desire to share my point of view and my writing. I found the best way to express all of that was through the craft of becoming a singer songwriter.  It brings me a lot of joy. Continue reading

SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Calan Mai

THEAUSSIEWORD.COM catches up with Australian singer/songwriter Calan Mai.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

I always knew I wanted to be a writer. But when I was a kid I didn’t make the connection between music and writing: the idea that songs were constructed and could be about any subject matter. Once I began learning guitar at 13, it didn’t take long for me to start writing my own songs. The compulsion was always there, I just needed the musical knowledge. I’m drawn to songs because they are one of the most concise ways to tell a story.Continue reading

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

I worked on a charity album, with a charity called Music for Youth where 30-40 kids from across the UK came to record instruments on my record & one of the tracks got remixed and suddenly I’m sitting next to Lady Gaga & The scissor sisters on the charts. I then got calls from amazing producers to write an original album and on one of the tracks I needed a rapper. I thought I would revisit one of the talented kids from the charity but one thing led to another and I ended up collaborating with Snoop Dogg! I have been very fortunate to get that opportunity & it opened a lot of doors for me!

Give us an introduction. How did it all begin? What had you first interested in music? It all began the day I woke up in the dry Todd riverbed being kicked in the stomach by an old Aboriginal woman and told to move on. I had been missing for three days on an alcohol and drug fuelled bender. It was at this I point I realised change needed to happen. All my thought allowed me to do was cast my mind back to how music was my only real escape from a traumatic childhood. Music was the doorway to the possibilities of so many different beginnings. I always wanted to be an entertainer of sorts from the times when I’d sneak my mothers’ vinyls and listen to my dads’ cassette collection. Flicking through family and friends record collections. Discovering adventures, tails, poetry, love and passion through songs and the realisation that if you are meant to be on a particular path the universe will find a way to bring you back to your true north. (Very hippie I know but that’s the truth) Music has been my one true freedom. Continue reading
