theaussieword.com meets Matthew Munro for a special interview.

How and where did it all begin for you? It began in musical theatre – the role of Kurt in Sound of Music when I was 12.

What drew your interest to the music industry? I have always loved to sing and I heard you could do what you love as a job.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? I love to write songs that not only tell a story but draw people in so they can feel the emotion of the song not just the words.

What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? I would love to one day be the headline artist at Gympie, my own show at Tamworth, the opportunity to travel around the world singing my own songs.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? I hope to release new music later this year. Any plans to tour?  In the early stages of planning.

Tell us a bit about your latest release and how would you best describe your music? This release is a reflection on what you perceive is important in life, only to discover that the grass is not always greener and things may not work out like you would like, and it gets you questioning the things you believe in life.  Country with a twist.

Give us an insight into your creative process. What gets you writing songs? Sometimes it is lyrics, sometimes it is a melody that needs words.  ‘Sold My Soul’ was a melody that found words.  I always write with my guitar the lyrics and sound need to go together.

Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music? I’m not sure about a hidden meaning, but it always has a story which I hope the audience can find.

Success, what is the secret to it? To set realistic goals and give it your all.

What has been your biggest career highlight so far? Selling out my first headline show and performing at the Golden Guitars in Tamworth.

Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? Garth Brooks, Ed Sheeran, Morgan Evans

Are there any new projects in the pipeline? Yes, plans to record new songs for release.

The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? Still writing and singing songs, touring, playing a festival or two.

What is your favourite and least favourite part about this line of work and why? I love performing live, I am not so good at talking about myself.

Name a few of your favourite Australian artists. Travis Collins, Brad Butcher, Morgan Evans, Beccy Cole, Ashley Dallas

The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? I like social media and its ability to connect people, I do however think you either use it or you don’t and there are lots of people who are not connected through this medium and it is important to use other avenues to enhance who sees your music.

How do you plan on cracking the international market? One plan at a time, I am still trying to make sure my home country gets to hear about my music.

Do you collaborate with others? Who is on your wish-list? Yes I do, I have written with Alan Caswell, Matt Scullion, David Carter, and hope to write with Bill Chambers, Brad Butcher, or Ed Sheeran

What advice do you give for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? Make it a marathon not a sprint.

A message for your fans. How do you best interact and respond with your fans? I use both facebook and Instagram as well as the opportunity to contact me through my website.

Any last words? Thank you 😊
