Special Interview: Beach Youth

theaussieword.com catches up with Beach Youth for a special interview.

Give us an introduction. How did it all begin? What had you first interested in music? Before we met together, we were playing the music all by ourselves. It all has began in Spring 2013 with the meeting of Simon Etienne and Gautier thanks to free ads on the Internet. We started playing the music together in September of the same year. What was interesting about the project was to mix the influences coming from each and every one of the four of us.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? Our songwriting is meant to make people dreaming and imagine they’re on California’s beaches. You know here in Normandy the weather is quite bad all the year, so our will is to bring a little of sun to all the people around us.

What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? Our biggest goal would be to do a big summer tour, to all the big music fests in Europe. We are four good friends and it would be an amazing experience to be on the road for three or four months.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour? We are working on new songs for the coming year. We don’t have any planed dates at the moment, but we can assure you some news will soon arrive on our social network pages.

Tell us a bit about your latest album and how would you best describe your music? We don’t have any album or EPs at the moment. We only have recorded and released 4 independant songs included in our SoundCloup page. We could describe our music as a sunshining easy structured music. Our aim is not to write experimentaly structured pieces, we want to go further but keeping the simple verse-chorus-verse. In the Surf Pop style we play, it is more efficient than to deal with complexity. An efficient rythm part, a well thought association between bass and drums, a guitar that plays major chords and another melodic one, and texts on personal experiences or wonderings, here you have the Beach Youth recipe.

Success, what is the secret to it? The principle of success look superficial to us, like one would be a selling machine… As long as you are yourself you know you are good.

What has been your biggest career highlight? Beach Youth is like a little bit more than one year old. Maybe it is too soon to deal with a career thing, but we played two capitals (London and Paris). This might be considered as our biggest career highlight.

Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? Here in Normandy, you can find some very good artists. In Caen (the city we come from) there are a lot of influences we inspire from. We get into the indie pop music. We don’t consider as part of the music industry, we are most likely to listen to independant stuff. These are two different worlds. 9/ Any new projects in the pipeline? In the early 2015 we are going to get in studio with the wish of releasing an EP. The idea has been processing for mounths, and we now feel OK to do it.

The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? We only want to thrive, time only knows where we’ll be in a few years.

Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists. If you mean Australian artists, we enjoy bands like Tame Impala and San Cisco.

The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? Social networks ans medias helped us to get our records out into the public eye, for sure. Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, these are useful platforms for the bands like ours, the little and indie ones. We are aware of the opportunity of our generation to have such platforms, but it can give you either great things or the best shits ever.

Thanks for the interview! What final message do you have for us today? Thank you guys for your interest in us ! Merry Christmass and Happy New Year to every readers !
