New Music: U2 ‘Ordinary Love’ for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom

Further to our post in October.. U2 have released this video for new track Ordinary Love

October, 2013:
U2 has revealed their first new song in three years with Ordinary Love, a soaring anthem for the upcoming biopic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” Starring “The Wire” actor Idris Elba in the tile role, “Mandela” tells the story of the South African leader’s early life and imprisonment. U2 penned “Ordinary Love” specifically for the film, in theaters Nov. 29.

Hear portions of the new track — their first since 2010’s “Soon,” off the “U2 360 at the Rose Bowl” DVD set — during the film’s just-released second trailer:

U2 and their frontman Bono are longtime admirers and supporters of Madiba, who turned 95 in July and has been in poor health. Weinstein Company co-founder Harvey Weinstein asked the band to write the track.

“It was the fastest ‘yes’ I have ever received,” he said. “The band saw various cuts of the film over the summer and worked diligently to write a song that truly reflects Nelson Mandela. I think they did a brilliant job honoring the man and the leader they have known for over 20 years.”

U2’s last album, “No Line on the Horizon,” arrived in 2009. In a recent radio interview in Ireland, bassist Adam Clayton confirmed that the band is nearing the finish line on its followup.

“We’re trying to get these 12 songs absolutely right and get them finished by the end of November, and then we can kind of enjoy Christmas,” he said. “It’s a bit of a return to U2 of old, but with the maturity, if you like, of the U2 of the last 10 years. It’s a combination of those two things and it’s a really interesting hybrid.”
