NEW MUSIC: Tom Lee-Richards ‘What Could Otherwise Be Had’

After releasing the “deeply moving”* music video ‘Madness’, selected for a number of festivals including the Auckland International Film Festival and Sydney Lift-Off, Melbourne based Alt-Pop artist Tom Lee-Richards is once again showing a completely different side with his hypnotic track ‘What Could Otherwise Be Had’.

Mixed by Tony Espie (The Avalanches) and engineered by Jake Louis Rush, the track marks Tom’s debut as a solo producer, completely re-inventing ‘Madness’, originally co-produced with Matt Neighbour (Courtney Barnett).

Capturing and building on Tom’s live acapella looping ‘What Could Otherwise be Had’ has an understated, mouth-percussion based swagger that also gives a nod to 70’s and 80’s synth tones and assured D’Angelo famed bass lines. Taking only the evocative lyrics and melody of the original it strikes out in bold new vocal directions that contrast with the dark nostalgic synth elements.
