Moogfest 2014, “The Synthesis of Technology, Art and Music”, has set an impressive lineup for the upcoming festival slated for April 23 to 27 in Asheville, NC.
On the bill are Kraftwerk, who will play a total of three times during the festival, Pet Shop Boys, who will headline on opening night, Chic Featuring Nile Rodgers, M.I.A., the Bernie Worrell Orchestra, Flying Lotus and a host of other electronic based artists.
Also part of the proceedings are everything from engineering workshops to a contest that challenges entrants to build a battery powered device for under $70 that is “capable of creating new and unique sounds.” Speakers include Giorgio Moroder, Laurie Anderson, Dan Deacon, Keith Emerson, David X. Cohen and many more.
Moogfest was created as a tribute to Robert Moog, the man who created the first Moog Synthesizer and whose company has developed a variety of tools to help musicians create in new and unusual ways. The first festival was held in 2004 and moved to Asheville, the home of Moog Music, in 2008.
Chic has been nominated seven times for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and their vinyl efforts will be celebrated with a new collection.
With the year Nile Rodgers has had with Daft Punk it may be proof that the producer and his band (with Bernard Edwards) have influence and true staying power.
Chic’s legacy will be chronicled on August 26 with the Chic 12″ Singles Collection, five 12″ vinyl records with ten of the band’s best known songs in their original extended form.
For those that don’t remember, during the disco era, extended versions of many songs were released on 12″ singles for use in clubs. Those versions were rarely released outside of that format for fans of the artists.
Included are all of Chic’s charting singles from their first three album, including such classics as Le Freak, I Want Your Love and Good Times, along with 1982′s Hangin’ and 1992′s Chic Mystique, all housed in retro disco sleeves.
Disc 1: Dance, Dance, Dance / Everybody Dance
Disc 2: Le Freak / I Want Your Love
Disc 3: Chic Cheer / Good Times
Disc 4: My Forbidden Lover / My Feet Keep Dancing
Disc 5: Hangin’ / Chic Mystique

Ah, freak out! Le freak, c’est chic Freak out! Remember the words? One of the biggest songs in the history of music!…. Nile Rodgers, the Chic front man staged a marathon set for us diehard disco fans at Melbourne’s Billboards last Wednesday night. Flanked by two amazing female backup singers and a perfectly sounding band, Nile Rodgers and Co. delivered a show which now has the whole town talking! The venue, jam packed with fans, listened to one of the best disco set lists ever heard. The hits from yesteryear rolled on, the sound was spectacular – it was disco at its finest.
I had the privilege of witnessing this show, Nile sharing his past musical highlights with the audience in what seemed like an intimate performance. We heard about his dealings with Madonna, Duran Duran, David Bowie, Diana Ross…such a long list of talent, amazing history and let me tell you some classic tunes! Love your work Nile, be sure to come back soon!
Here is a very exclusive look at the Nile Rodgers performance at Melbourne’s Billboards, put together with some of TheAussieWord’s very handy video and photography skills! Ahhhhhhh FREAK OUT!
Nile Rodgers is currently in Australia headlining several shows with Chic – TheAussieWord will be in attendance! Rodgers was the mastermind behind the production of the INXS track Original Sin back in the studios of New York in 1984. Featuring Darryl Hall from Hall & Oates, the song reached number one for INXS in Australia. I have had word that Nile Rodgers will be performing Original Sin during their Australian set of shows!
