How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?
I always knew I wanted to be a writer. But when I was a kid I didn’t make the connection between music and writing: the idea that songs were constructed and could be about any subject matter. Once I began learning guitar at 13, it didn’t take long for me to start writing my own songs. The compulsion was always there, I just needed the musical knowledge. 30 years ago, two significant moments in Australian music industry history arrived out of a passion for Australian contemporary music.
The first was the inaugural ARIA Awards in 1986. The second was the staging of a major series of outdoor festivals in the summer of 1986/87 under the banner AUSTRALIAN MADE. They were both ambitious ideas borne out of a frustration for the lack of respect for, and recognition of, our country’s musicians.
