theaussieword.com catches up with Mason Watts.
How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?
I actually grew up in and around live music! My Dad used to run a few pubs and clubs up in Queensland. I was always obsessed with listening/meeting the bands and artists that passed through. Apparently my Dad used to drag me away from the stage because I would hassle them all so much!
What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?
It’s this almost indescribable feeling of fulfilment and purpose that happens every now and again when I’m writing or performing. It’s a super rare moment but when it hits it’s the most addictive feeling in the world.
What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist?
World domination! Haha
But seriously, a sustainable career and a good mental health is all I could ask for.
What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour?
New music hopefully. Depending on how successful “Recovery” is, I plan on getting back in the studio sooner rather than later!
Tell us a bit about your latest release and how would you best describe your music?
Recovery came about following a real low point in my personal life. I took a relationship for granted without realising it, until it was too late. I think the song really reflects this idea as well as my desperation and hope for a second chance.
Give us an insight into your creative process. What gets you writing songs?
Usually girls. Haha!
To be honest I don’t really know. It’s constantly changing and there’s no real formula to bring about the creative process. But that’s also why I enjoy it so much. It’s never the same experience twice!
Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music?
Take a listen and see what you think??
Success, what is the secret to it?
Once I find out, I’ll be sure to let you know! All I’ve come to realise is the harder you work the luckier you get.
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Releasing my debut single into the world. It’s been something I’ve wanted to do since I was 8 years old. So to have finally ticked that box was an amazing feeling.
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring?
I draw inspiration from plenty of artists in the industry. At the moment I’m listening to a lot of Matt Corby and a heap of Dean Lewis.
Are there any new projects in the pipeline?
Keep your eyes peeled and yours ears to the ground!
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now?
Still creating and performing the best quality music I’m capable of for as long many years as people will listen!
What is your favourite and least favourite part about this line of work and why?
My favourite and least favourite aspect is probably the unpredictability. It can be amazingly fun never knowing what’s around the corner! But it’s also a bit annoying when trying to plan things in advance!
Name a few of your favourite Australian artists.
Matt Corby, Dean Lewis, INXS
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye?
Honestly I think there’s never been a better time to be an artist. There are so many platforms to help get your music in front of an audience, and the best part is the public is actively looking for new music as well.
How do you plan on cracking the international market?
I think I’ll take on Australia first. Once I’ve got the momentum behind me, I’ll start to explore the overseas markets.
Do you collaborate with others? Who is on your wish-list?
It’s and ever growing/bottomless list if I’m honest! But it was a huge privilege to work with Edd Holloway on “Recovery”. That was definitely a dream collaboration.
What advice do you give for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Get involved in your local music scene. Take on as many gigs as you can! Start writing/recording music. It’s good for the soul!
A message for your fans. How do you best interact and respond with your fans?
Thank you for the support, this whole dream of mine is only a reality because of you! I love you all for it.
Best place to get in touch is my socials!
Any last words?
Go listen to my single “Recovery”!
