#TheAussieWord catches up with Colin Hennerz for a special interview.
Hi Colin. How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?
Growing up through school I’ve always had a love for electronic music. I used to download apps on my phone and computer and have a go at making my own beats. Eventually I upgraded my equipment and my passion for making music turned into more than just a hobby as I grew older. I fell in love with the artists, their techniques for production, and of course the ever-changing sound of electronic music.
What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?
Definitely my fans! When I perform live, I always make time to meet and talk to fans who have come to see me perform. Seeing people love, appreciate, and be inspired by music that I have created makes me happy and more motivated to keep producing and doing what I do!
What are some of your biggest goals you hope to accomplish?
A major goal of mine is to DJ at a major festival in America. By looking at my analytics I can see that I have a huge fanbase in the States. I get tagged in posts and Instagram stories almost every week by DJs in the U.S playing my music live at clubs and festivals. To be booked and play over there would be a great accomplishment for me.
What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour (in addition to current dates)?
I’m always working on new music for my fans so expect more releases to come! As for more gig dates, I’m always trying to fill my schedule with shows in Australia. Hopefully after my show in Bali and the release of my new track ‘Forever Young,’ I’ll be back performing overseas again.
Tell us a bit about your latest release ‘Forever Young’ and how would you best describe your music?
In my latest track ‘Forever Young,’ I’ve put a hard dance spin on a classic tune. It’s the kind of sound my fans will be familiar with – hard kicks, moving basslines, euphoric synths, but also paired with a catchy vocal that listeners are familiar with. I’m hoping it’s going to be a hit!
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
A major highlight for me was playing my first time in Vancouver, Canada to a sold-out show. I didn’t think I had so many fans over there!
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye?
I feel like nowadays social media plays such a huge role in many DJ’s and producers’ branding. Having a strong Instagram or TikTok page can make a DJ so much more than just a great artist. Social media allowed me to establish my brand and become relatable to my fans. It gave me a platform to share more than my music and become sort of an internet personality. All this just helped me push my music to more people which is why to me it is such an important aspect of my music career.
What advice do you give for other artists wanting to follow in your footsteps?
For new up and coming DJs or producers remember that there isn’t really a right or wrong in being creative. Have fun and try to be as unique as you can. Think outside of the box. Do things that push your own boundaries and act outside of your comfort zone.
A message for your fans. How do you best interact and respond with your followers and fans?
Whenever I play my gigs, I always try to interact with my fans out in the crowd and talk to people before or after the show. I’ll always try to make time for photos or just have a chat to whoever I can!
