New Music: Jeremy Hunter ‘Picking Up The Pieces’

Co-founder of the former Brisbane indie-orchestra Inland Sea, Jeremy Hunter is now stepping out on his own with a debut self-titled EP of acoustic folk-rock songs of a somewhat different bent.

Less than a month after returning from a three-week UK tour with Inland Sea in mid-2012, Jeremy Hunter went into a studio nestled within the mountainous bushland of northwest Brisbane. There, together with his friend and producer Konstantin Kersting (The Belligerents), he spent three days away from the bustle of the city, spending long hours putting down the five songs that would become his debut EP. A multi-instrumentalist, he resolved to play every instrument himself in an effort to find the true feel of the songs and catch hold of exactly what he wanted to express.

The result is a heartfelt mix of instruments, styles and sounds, ranging from up-tempo power ballads to delicate folk tracks and cathartic blues numbers. The songs deal with love, escape, disillusionment and surrender, and other tricky aspects of human nature that can only be caught out of the corner of your eye. Fusing a penchant for poetic imagery with an ear for a good melody, Jeremy Hunter’s self-titled EP is sure to captivate the heart of many a listener.
