THEAUSSIEWORD.COM catches up with Kim Churchill in a one on one exclusive!
What can you tell our readers about you? How and where did it all begin? Classical guitar when I was in primary school. Finished high school and set out in the back of a van busking and playing where I could. The journey has turned and exploded in all kinds of incredible ways and I more or less just hold on and figure out ways to create new forms and styles of music. Experimenting is the most interesting part for me.
What had you first interested in music? I quickly became the kid who played guitar in school. I think from a very early stage in my life it was an identity thing. However the music itself was something I was passionate about and by 17 I was ready to embrace everything I could find beyond just playing guitar.
Who motivates or influences your quest to make great music? Everything that comes my way in any form I think you can’t help but musically mirror the life your living and what’s happening in and around it.
Do you have any planned tours coming up? Yes, I am embarking on several different tours this summer in Australia and heading to a bunch of great festivals as well.
What are some of your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? Purely to add to the general evolution of music, to give the world something it has never heard before and to motivate as many as I can to live life to the fullest..
What can fans expect from you in the coming months? I am hopeful to make a serious musical expanse. The live show has for a long time been a real experiment in sound-scaping and layer as much as anything. I’ll be bringing an electric violin player on board from New Caledonia who seems to be as obsessed with effects as I am. I think between the two of us there will be a limitless amount of directions any performance could go. Other than that, more albums, more shows…more good times.
Success, what is the secret to it and what has been your biggest career highlight so far? I think the secret is to never look down. Biggest highlight would have to be meeting John Paul Jones. Can’t think what will ever match that. Jimmy perhaps..
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? Neil Young and Bob Dylan are the two big figures for me. They have dedicated their whole life to the form of song-writing and have always pushed to musically evolve. Similarly, with more contemporary figures like Jack White or Justin Vernon. I bashfully admit I think Chris Martin is a song-writing genius, especially melodically.
How would you best describe you and your music to your fans? Fluid and constantly morphing. Live is more of a multi –instrumental exercise in sound scaping. The songs become the canvas’. Transitional folk-metal.
What can you tell us about your latest album? ‘Detail of Distance’. Recorded it in Vancouver and was my first experiences recording alongside a drummer and string quartet. The album really delves into my experiments with distortion and delays. I think that’s my strongest memory of making it, all the distortion and delays.. And the Omnichord.
Are there any new exciting projects in the works? Always. For the next 2 months I’ll focus on the live work with the Violin player. Have just finished an acoustic album alongside the same string quartet I used on ‘Detail of Distance’, though I’m not sure when I’ll release it.
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? In a bigger van with any luck.. one that’s got a stove top to boot.
Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists. Jeff Lang, Benjalu, Marshall O’kell, Angus Stone and Lloyd Spiegel.
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? It seems no matter how the world changes we are still chained to the fact that a good song is a good song. The art is still at the core.
