Special Interview: Beatific

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

When I was about five I saw the rock band Kiss on the show 321 contact wearing platform boots, black leather, and exploding pyrotechnics behind them. I was pretty much sold from that point on. The cannons in AC/DC “for those about to rock we salute you” were also a defining moment. Something about fireworks and music together felt synergistic, haha.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?

I believe in the transformational power of music. I believe that music is a reflection of the collective unconscious, and if we tap into it, we achieve a psychic union of all beings who are interested.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

I grew up on the Gold Coast and music was a big part of my upbringing. As a young kid, my Dad would take me and my brother to a country music club and we would watch the musicians jam and rehearse their songs for upcoming shows. I was drawn to the sound of the electric guitar immediately. Dad showed me a few chords and I was hooked.  I formed a band with my siblings (The Bostocks) and we were out gigging from a very early age right into our adulthood, booking our own shows and performing anywhere from pubs, clubs, festivals, weddings and BBQ’s.  It was a great way to hone our craft.

Special Interview: Jayne Denham

Jayne Denham stops by THEAUSSIEWORD.COM.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

I grew up in a musical family and sang in our local church so I was on stage at a very early age, but it wasn’t till I was in high school that I knew I wanted to become an entertainer.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?

I am always thinking of crazy ideas and often one word or a scene from a movie or a song will  spark an idea that becomes a whole big direction and creative project. I love albums and the musical journey that you can create for people’s ears, so I am always creating more than just a song or a show but an experience.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

I wouldn’t say my interest was drawn to the music industry itself, but rather drawn to just making songs and wanting people to hear them. I grew up in a house where music was always playing, so I was always singing and listening, enamoured by music as a form of expression. I learnt the violin when I was little and then the saxophone and gradually the guitar. Once I was able to accompany myself on the guitar, the songs came tumbling out.

Special Interview: Nicholas Brown

Nicholas Brown goes one on one with Brian Peel for a special interview.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

The very beginning for me was when I played a lead role in our school musical Antshillvania (which was set in an ant hill). I realised that the stage was for me and that I felt quite comfortable in a black leotard. My professional music career began when I was 8 years old in a boys choir called The Young Sydney Singers. We got to perform at the Entertainment Centre many times, on the Ray Martin show and we were the go to kids choir for hire in Sydney for album recordings. It was the first time I was in a studio and the first time I sang on TV. We even sang with Olivia Newton-John at the Entertainment Centre. Learning to harmonise at such a young age was such a blessing. Most of the songs from our repertoire I still remember – the religious songs in latin were particularly beautiful – Quando Corpus, Ave Maria etc. I feel very lucky to have learnt such challenging, beautiful music at such a young age. I was friends with the man who was our choir master up until his death last year – Paul Bateman was his name and he was an incredible man that dedicated his life to music and teaching. I miss him. He was always a great believer in me and was the first person to give me a leg up in the entertainment industry. There’s something very special about growing up in a boys choir. Boys can be so innocent before their voices break – before they turn into awkward teenagers and then shitty men. It’s a special time and I’m grateful to have had that time singing in harmony with other like-minded kids who were passionate about music.
