SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Veronica Fusaro

THEAUSSIEWORD.COM catches up with Swiss artist Veronica Fusaro.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry? I guess I’ve always been drawn to music. Ever since I was a little girl, I just really enjoyed singing and participated in school choirs and bands whenever I had the chance to. Eventually people started saying that they like my voice, I started playing the guitar in 4th grade, discovered the craft of songwriting and so on. It was always a very natural thing for me to do. The industry aspect came along three years ago, when I started working with my manager and realized, that there is actually a chance of making a living out of this.65203536_2417806008281896_4714814960662740992_n

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? The fact that I feel something and then I write a song about these feelings, then somebody else listens to it and that piece of music that I made makes them feel something as well, is just so fascinating to me. You can make a change with music, whether it is in one single person or the whole world, music is just a beautiful thing. Also, growing up I saw what other artists accomplished and what they were able to do with their music, and that really inspires me as well to get better and better and to keep going.

What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? There are a lot of things that I want to accomplish… starts with me making the most honest music possible and goes on with being able to tour the world and have people come to my shows.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour? Yes! I’m always a bit on tour, but I have a new EP coming out this September and I’m going on my EP-release tour in autumn/winter. I’m very much looking forward to that!

Tell us a bit about your latest release and how would you best describe your music? I was very excited to put out „lie to me“. This song means a lot to me, and I must admit I’m quite proud of the lyrics. I wrote this song in my parents house basement where I have my little home recording studio, and finished producing it in London with Jamie Ellis. This song is the opening chapter of my EP, and very well introduces the sound scenery of my new music. I always use words like warm, organic, honest for my music. If I’d have to put a genre on it, I’d say it’s soul pop music.

Give us an insight into your creative process. What gets you writing songs? Life. It could be something that my friend is going through, something I observed or something that won’t stop tormenting my head and heart.

Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music? I like language. I think there’s so many beautiful ways to describe something without even once naming the actual thing. So you might find a line or two that could mean something else than just the obvious one.

Success, what is the secret to it? Well, we first have to ask: What is success? Is success that I get to do what I love every single day? Am I not successful yet because I haven’t played at the Opera House in Sydney? I guess how I see it is, that true success is attained when you’re happy.

What has been your biggest career highlight so far? I will be playing Glastonbury Festival June 29th. I guess that’s a pretty cool one to add to my list of shows that I played.

Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? Amy Winehouse. Unique voice, incredible lyrics and beautiful songs. Oh yeah, and very very real. Another one of my favorite artists is Frank Ocean. His music feels like you’d be watching the sun go down before an eternal winter.

Are there any new projects in the pipeline? As previously mentioned, I have a new EP in the making! 🙂

The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? Still making music, that’s for sure. Hopefully on tour somewhere around the world, singing my songs to people I haven’t met yet.

What is your favourite and least favourite part about this line of work and why? As an independent artist sometimes you have 482 things to do at the same time, and it can be quite frustrating. My manager and I don’t really recall when we had our last Sunday off. But you know, it’s ok, it’s a long way to the top after all.

Name a few of your favourite Australian artists. I’ve been a big fan of Troye Sivan ever since he put out his first record. I’ve just recently re-discovered his song „The Good Side“, such a simple, beautiful song! An artist I’ve recently discovered is Stella Donnelly, very cool lyrics and voice. And of course, Sia! The mastermind of pop music. Love her.

The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? Social media can be fun. I’m not the best at it… but I try my best. It can be such a beautiful way to get your music out into the world, but it can also be a very very dark place… you know, it’s the internet. Can’t get around it, so you might as well make the best out of it.

How do you plan on cracking the international market? By being myself and write the best music possible, to never stop and of course a bit of luck might be necessary as well.

Do you collaborate with others? Who is on your wish-list? I would love to work with Childish Gambino once. Or maybe even just have a chat, he seems a very interesting person to have a chat with.

What advice do you give for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? Just do what you love. Everything else will then fall into place.

A message for your fans. How do you best interact and respond with your fans? Thank you very much for listening to my music! Mostly through the socials, instagram if I’d have to choose one.

Any last words? The music video to ‘Lie To Me’ came out last week! Would make me super happy if you’d check it out! Other than that, thank you very much for this interview & have a nice day! 🙂
