Special Interview: Tom Lee-Richards

theaussieword.com catches up with Tom Lee-Richards.

Tell us how it all started. What had you first interested in music?

I probably don’t know what first drew me to music. I do remember a 4 year old fascination with the Beatles as typical as that sounds. I didn’t consciously want to sound like them though. I also remember enjoying making mouth noises which was my first experimentation with rhythm. Then I wanted to be Michael Jackson at about age 7.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?

Wanting to say something about the odd world we live in usually turns into the bones of a song. I’m always making up melodies and percussion ideas as I go about my day though which is fun. Then it feels good to turn it all into a complete arrangement.

What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist?

I want to immerse myself in a few totally different styles of music and collaborate with and learn from some of my favourite artists in each of those areas of music. I think that is a great challenge especially as it means letting go of the idea that one musical style defines me. Oh also more world touring.Continue reading

Special Interview: Lina

theaussieword.com catches up with Lina, the first American / Palestinian winner of Israel’s The Voice!

Tell us how it all started. What had you first interested in music? I’ve loved music since a very young age. Actually my first appearance on tv was when I was 5 years old, when they interviewed me about music instruments that me and my sister built from recycled plastic.. but the first time I took singing seriously was when I was 16 during a piano lesson. My piano teacher heard me singing for the first time and was completely shocked, and made me perform the song (playing the piano and singing) in front of everyone in the conservatory. I owe her big time! Continue reading

Special Interview: Thomas Oliver

theaussieword.com catches up with Australian born, New Zealand based singer/songwriter Thomas Oliver.

Thomas_Oliver_1_[Credit_Terry_Longley_&_Michelle_Davies]_HI_RES

Tell us how it all started. What had you first interested in music?

My dad is a singer-songwriter and he used to sing songs to my brothers and me before bed. I have one particular memory of him singing Joni Mitchell’s ‘Big Yellow Taxi’. The message in the song really reached me, even as a really young boy. This really instilled a love of music in me from a young age.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? My greatest motivation to make music is my innate desire to create in other people the amazing feelings I get when I experience good music. Obviously, there’s a selfish side to making music also, but for me I believe it comes second to the first one.

What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist?

I keep my goals quite close to my chest, actually. But one of them is to create an album that has a significant cultural impact; an album that changes things. Certainly easier said than done, especially in today’s saturated music market, but I believe there will always be more to say.

Success, what is the secret to it?

I’ve been really fortunate to have some great successes in the past year or two. When I analyse those successes, the thing that seems common to all of them is a genuine belief that it’s possible. We as humans are riddled with insecurities, myself included, but sometimes the most powerful thing you can do to help yourself is find a way to truly believe in the value of your contribution to this world.
