theaussieword.com’s special interview with Wise Child.
Tell us how it all started. What had you first interested in music? Our grandpa was a musician and singer and we remember him always breaking into song as kids. He played the ukulele before Vance Joy made it cool. Our parents also had a pretty varied record collection that was always on rotation day and night.
What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? We are both perfectionists at heart about things that matter to us, so we don’t really stop trying to let a song evolve until we think it is working.
What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? We would both love to tour overseas as a good excuse to see some mates in Europe.
Success, what is the secret to it? The secret depends on your definition of success.
What has been your biggest career highlight so far? Our last single launch was pretty amazing, we packed out the Old Bar on a Tuesday night. There was faces in the crowd we had not seen in ages.. One of the best nights.
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? Tom admires Tunde Adebimpe from TV On The Radio and Thom Yorke. Jem loves PJ Harvey and Bjork
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? Playing lots of gigs and maybe even a festival or two.
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? Nothing will ever replace the elation of seeing your favorite artist live and telling all your friends about how good you thought it was. Social media is useful to reach more people that like what you’re about.
Name a few of your favorite Aussie artists. Black Cab, ESC, The Drones, Pearls, Alice Ivy. RKDA, James Seedy
What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour? Finish an EP and hit the road with it!
Tell us a bit about your latest record, how would you best describe your music? The song isn’t so much about a story or anything, it’s based on a feeling. The feeling you get when you just want to explode out of your shell, or have a go at something you think is unreachable. Tom has a bit of a fascination with space, and the samples in the bridge are from the astronauts in the 1960’s/ 70’s during the space race.
Do you have any new projects in the pipeline? We have a lot of new music we are recording, so just want to get it all out as soon we can.
Thanks for the interview! What final message do you have for us today? Thanks for having us! We love The Aussie Word rules!
