Special Interview: Veludo

A special theaussieword.com interview with the band Veludo…

What can you tell our readers about you? How and where did it all begin?
Three of us moved to Melbourne from Perth with our previous band. After a few lineup changes, the direction and sound of the band changed dramatically. We decided we needed a fresh start and Veludo was born. Soon after that we found our bass player Jared who had moved to Melbourne from Tasmania and he fitted in perfectly with what we wanted to do musically.
What had you first interested in music?
My sister gave me The Sex Pistols, Never Mind the Bollocks album and I was instantly hooked and knew I had to play music.
Who motivates or influences your quest to make great music?
I am always trying to write the perfect song, like a surfer searching for the perfect wave. I know I will never write it but it keeps me going I’m always trying new things and writing on different instruments.
Do you have any planned tours coming up?
We are just about to kick off our “Stay Young Tour”. We are starting off in Perth and then doing a heap of regional Victorian shows, then up to Sydney and finishing up back in Melbourne.

What are some of your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist?
I think any artist has one pretty simple goal and that is to be able to freely create art without being distracted by the constraints of the rat race. I just want to be able to make music for a living. Unfortunately that is getting harder and harder to do.
What can fans expect from you in the coming months?
As I mentioned we about to embark on a national tour. So we will be gigging like crazy for the next few months.
Success, what is the secret to it and what has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Success is about dedication and commitment. There is no secret. You just have to want it more than anything else and get out there and get it. A bit of talent helps as well. (but not always!!) My biggest highlight was walking off stage in Broome when we supported INXS and having Kirk Pengilly and Tim Farris cheer us off the stage.
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring?
Anyone who is out there pouring the heart and soul into their music night after night is inspiring to me.
How would you best describe you and your music to your fans?
I guess our music is rock. We are always trying to do something different so that people can stay interested. Peoples attention spans are pretty short these days so you’ve got to keep it interesting!
What can you tell us about your latest album?
Our current record is a self titled EP. We have put 4 tracks that best represent who we are at this moment. Here and now. It has a wide range of sounds and textures and we are super proud of it.
Are there any new exciting projects in the works?
We have just finished our EP after a few months working on it so now we getting out and playing live over the next few months. Although we have already started writing a bunch of new songs!
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now?
Hopefully, still in it! Our ultimate aim is to put out a full length album and get overseas as well. We’ll see!
Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists.
Birds of Tokyo
Eskimo Joe
Karnivool
The Temper Trap
The Living End
London Cries
The Basics
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye?
Most of what we do is on social media. We have been able to reach a large number of people in South America and Europe through social media which would have been almost impossible 5 or 10 years ago without a major label. Sure there isn’t as much money being made through record sales but the fact that we can reach so many people is a blessing. That’s what’s music is about isn’t it? Sharing our art with people all over the world.
Thank you for the interview! What can you leave fans of theaussieword.com with here today?
Be excellent to each other!
