Terence Jack speaks exclusively to theaussieword.com!
Tell us how it all started. What had you first interested in music?
For grade 7-band class we all had to pick an instrument and my parents had an old classical guitar sitting around the house. I picked it
up and never put it down. I’ve been playing in bands ever since then. I was in a ska band, rock, funk-ish and bounced around a lot.
What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?
I’ve dealt a lot with death in my life and it made me realize how short we actually have in our lives. I just didn’t want to spend time on things that I didn’t care about. My aim is to channel the art through me from whatever and wherever that comes from.
What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist?
As an artist some of my goals are playing Red Rocks, The Gorge Amphitheatre but on a musical level is to express everything the way I hear it in my mind.
Success, what is the secret to it?
You tell me! I don’t really know but I think that just persistence, & hard work are good to count on.
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
I’ve toured Canada twice this year, this time with a full band. Playing across the country is a wonderfully grueling experience. Cutting through the Rockies with my band-mates has been truly great. We’re hitting the east coast here in about 2-weeks and that’s going to be a career landmark for sure.
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring?
Growing up I listened to Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and still find their musical journeys to be something very special. Nowadays there’s so much music and inspiring artists out there; Justin Vernon and all of his projects, Afie from Bahamas, there’s just so much great stuff out there.
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now?
I can see myself touring internationally playing festivals, releasing records, writing for other artists, collaborating and just learning as much as possible along the way.
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye?
The power of social media is so grand. It’s changed the world on a social a political level and holds individuals and organizations accountable for their actions. Nowadays a band either participates on some level or doesn’t get heard.
Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists.
I used to listen to Xavier Rudd years ago, Kimbra is a friggin’ talent, John Butler Trio, Wolfmother, Empire of the Sun to name a few. Also, my bass player would leave my band if I didn’t mention Tame Impala or Pond on this list.
What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour?
We are touring right now across Canada with 30 dates then back to Vancouver to play the festival season. November we’re looking to tour Australia or Europe. I’m hoping Australia for the weather!
Tell us a bit about your latest record, how would you best describe your music?
The latest record wasn’t supposed to fit into any specific genre. I went into the studio with around 25 songs and cut it down to 6. Songs like ‘Eastern Rise’ is pretty Rock & Roll whereas songs like ‘Never Get Back’ the title track, is Indie Rock I suppose.
Do you have any new projects in the pipeline?
I’ll be going back into the studio for a full-length record in October most likely. I’m trying to align with a Western US & Australian tour likely right after that while we’re mixing/mastering the record.
Thanks for the interview! What final message do you have for us today?
I just hope Australia can be in our very near future. I’ve never been and have friends from all over Oz so really looking forward to getting there.
