SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Sydney Lauren

New York Singer/Songwriter Sydney Lauren goes one on one with theaussieword.com!

Give us an introduction. How did it all begin? What had you first interested in music? When I was a child, I was extremely shy. Performing is probably something you’d never think I’d go into. I was always a huge music lover but I stuck to singing in my bedroom when no one was home. My grandparents had a beautiful antique piano in their home and whenever we would go visit I’d sit there for hours and dabble. Eventually my parents had enough of my begging and they let me take piano and guitar lessons. I figured if I could accompany myself with an instrument, it’d be easier to sing in front of people. Eventually my passion developed and I started writing and performing more and more!

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? I’m a really passionate person, when I love something I really really love it. Other music really motivates me. When a new album comes out that I love, I get lost in the music and in a creative space in my brain for a while. I love a good story, whether it’s something that happened in my life, or one that came from a friend or movie, that’s where my lyrical inspiration comes form.

What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? I hope to always write about what’s important to me. Putting my feelings into lyrics and melodies is my version of therapy and I hope these songs can help someone else as well. I’d also love to be able to tour and play shows in difference places and cultures.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour? I have some more music coming your way! Playing shows is definitely on my radar!

Tell us a bit about your latest album and how would you best describe your music? My new single “Afterlife” is a song about connecting with loved ones who have passed on. The inspiration for this song came after watching the anime film “Spirited Away”. I always wonder where our souls go when we pass and this song paints that picture. I eat, sleep, breath pop music so I’m sure you can hear that in these songs. My music is filled with catchy melodies and intense imagery. I really like to tell a story.

Success, what is the secret to it? To me, success is to have a life filled with happiness. If you’re being authentic and making decisions for yourself, you’ll be a lot happier than if you let others tell you what to do.

What has been your biggest career highlight? I’m still in the beginning of my music career! I’ve been really lucky to work with some great people in this business and create music I am proud of!

Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? There are so many pop artists that inspire me every day. If I had to choose one at the moment, it would probably be Camila Cabello. She’s an incredible talent and such a hard worker. It’s inspiring to see someone take so much control of their own career in this tough business.

Any new projects in the pipeline? I have a lot of new songs that I’d love to release in the near future!

The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? I’d love to be creating music and performing. There are so many more songs to be written!

Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists. I’m a huge Betty Who fan. Man, that girl is talented!

The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? I love social media but I definitely wish it didn’t play as big of a role as it does today. There are all these unspoken rules on what is “cool” and what’s not. Sometimes people don’t even get to your music because they don’t like what they see on your instgram profile. Social media is also really great though! It allows you to connect with people and express yourself in a different way!

Thanks for the interview! What final message do you have for us today? Thanks for listening! Let me know what you think of this music by visiting one of my sites!
