Special Interview: Mackenzie Thoms

theaussieword.com catches up with Mackenzie Thoms.

ljpIcn7sTell us how it all started. What had you first interested in music? When I was growing up, my mom was always singing around the house. I think that definitely sparked an interest a little later in my teens. When I was fourteen years old I was listening to the song “ No diggity” by Backstreet in my room and started singing along. Immediately I fell in love with the power of music and the ability to sing. It took me awhile to sing in front of people but when I became more comfortable and confident, I told myself that one day I would become something special. It hasn’t been an easy road but I truly think that as long as you believe and have a passion for what you do anything is possible.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? The ability to write songs about real experiences in my life. Good or bad, we all deal with internal issues. I hope that the world can find something to grasp onto and relate it to their own lives in the things that I sing about Whether it’s about love, a breakup, addiction, abandonment, etc. I want my music to take us all on a journey together. To me, that’s what making great music is all about.

What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? Some of my biggest goals are to tour the world and sing/perform my music in front of millions of fans. To be a major household name for a very long time to come. To make music that is timeless, speaks the truth, and winning a bunch of Grammy’s wouldn’t hurt.

Success, what is the secret to it? The secret is to believe in yourself along with putting the time, dedication and effort into your craft. Being extremely persistent even if it means annoying some people to get things done and in return, that will make others believe in you. No one is going to work harder for your dream than you are.

What has been your biggest career highlight so far? I would say the biggest highlight in my career thus far was having my first ever solo song “Conviction” released and it going #1 on hype machine. It really opened up a lot of doors for me to meet the right people.

Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? JusCZqn4dwWIAAl1Jltin Timberlake, Drake, Frank Ocean, John Mayer, The Eagles..

The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? Up there with the names I just mentioned 😉

The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? I think the music industry has given us such a huge platform socially. We are able to get our music out there for people to listen to all over the internet and are able to express ourselves instantaneously as well as receive feedback and support. I personally find it difficult at times to constantly post and update what I’m doing and where I’m going because I actually would call myself a bit of an introvert. At times I wish that the music would just speak for itself and that the other stuff didn’t matter as much. But with that being said, I’m trying to get better in all aspects of social media because I understand how important it is now days and people feel more connected to you. I know it will continue to help me grow my fanbase and also help me to become what I’ve always dreamed of becoming.

Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists. Sia, Cloves.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour? You can expect an EP release in the next few months. I don’t have any specifics on a tour quite yet but I’ll absolutely keep everyone posted very soon on any upcoming tours!!

Tell us a bit about your latest record, how would you best describe your music? My latest record is “Do Me All Again”, It’s about the difficulty for me of being in relationships and never allowing myself to fully commit to someone. If someone gave you only half of themselves would it be worth it to you? My music has a pop, urban, electronic feel to it.

Do you have any new projects in the pipeline? I’ll actually be releasing a video for my new single ‘Do Me All Again’! In addition I’m basically just writing and releasing more music for you all to hear 😉

Thanks for the interview! What final message do you have for us today? I’m so so grateful that my music is reaching all the way across the world to you. I can’t say thank you enough for showing support for my new song. It means everything to me, truly. I have so many great songs and I can’t wait to share with you all! I can’t do it without you so please help me keep spreading the word about my music!
