Special Interview: Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe)

theaussieword.com catches up with Kav Temperley from Eskimo Joe to discuss his latest solo album ‘All Your Devotion’.

Give us an introduction. How did it all begin? What had you first interested in music? It all began with the Beatles. At some point in time I bought myself The Beatles complete song book and by the time I had learned every song in the book at the age of 13, I was ready to start writing song of my own.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music? Writing and performing is hugely addictive. When you stumble upon a great chorus and your lyrics and melody meet in the middle in a harmonious way, there is a tangible electricity that runs through your body. It’s hard to beat.

What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? I want to keep writing songs, innovate and endlessly explore. I would love to one day write a song that becomes bigger than myself, so no one remembers who wrote it, it’s just THAT song.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour? I’m going to hit the road with my new solo album ‘All Your Devotion’. It’s just going to be me and acoustic guitar playing intimate shows, telling the stories behind the songs.

Tell us a bit about your latest album and how would you best describe your music? The album is a personal journey through the last few years of my life. My favourite era of sounds is definitely the early 70’s with albums like Neil Young’s ‘Harvest’ and Van Morrison’s ‘Moon Dance’. I really wanted to make a record that had that same sound, like a soothing balm for your ears, but sounded like it came out yesterday.

Success, what is the secret to it? Authenticity plus craft.

What has been your biggest career highlight? Every time I release a new record and people take it in to their homes and hearts, it’s always a new career highlight.

Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? I think people like Nick cave are inspiring, he has such a great work ethic. I hope to come close one day to the amount music, books and art that he has put out.

Any new projects in the pipeline? I’m working on a podcast called ‘Hat Jam’ which will see myself writing songs with a bunch of great Aussie muso’s.

The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? I would like to write and put out a new recording every two years. If its Kav solo album or an Eskimo Joe record, I don’t mind.

Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists. Tame Impala, Ball Park Music & Big Scary

The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media. How do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? I’ve purposely spent a good deal of time making sure this new album sounds great as a piece of vinyl. It’s very strange that we’ve entered this new era where music and books only exists in the ether. I feel like one day an advance civilization will discover the earth and be like “Wow they were really advanced up to a point, and then everything just disappeared overnight”. I’m still a fan of holding something real in my hands.

Thanks for the interview! What final message do you have for us today? Stay Warm.
