Special Interview: Bayley Pearl

Singer / Songwriter Bayley Pearl stops by THEAUSSIEWORD.COM.

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

I have trained from a young age in many styles of music and my songs are very influenced by a mixture of these, particularly rock/country/blues. For me it’s all about the storytelling and being able to write things that I can’t or won’t say in a normal setting. I love being able to use my personal experiences to connect with others and that has kept me striving to be a part of the music industry.

What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?

Telling a story that people can relate to and getting the chance to perform live and connect with an audience is my motivation.

What are some of your biggest goals you hope to accomplish?

Recording a full-length album and touring internationally.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour?

I am currently recording my debut EP due for release in March along with a 3-show tour. Tour details are coming soon.

Tell us a bit about your latest release and how would you best describe your music?

I wrote In Her Wake alongside two incredible songwriters Shawn Byrne and Danielle Lo Passo on a trip to Nashville. The song has since evolved into an anthem describing the strength a woman can possess.  The lyrics are heavily inspired by Carrie Underwood’s writing style, with lots of storytelling aspects. We used she and her instead of I and me to create the connection to the lyrics. The lyrics take some wild and natural environmental elements to describe the power a person can find inside themself. Along with a little message to those in their way! I feel my music really draws on some classic sounds of the 70’s 80’s and 90’s with a modern twist.

Give us an insight into your creative process. What gets you writing songs?

Almost every song I have written I have done through title writing, which is where the title comes first and the song after. I personally feel very drawn to song titles and love when they have their own hidden meaning and are not just the hook of the song.

Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music?

Oh definitely YES. In particular I have a song that will be on my EP that is written using Greek philosophy but you would never know it!

Success, what is the secret to it?

I am just starting to put my music out in the world, but I really think having a long-term strategy, a lot of hard work and a little luck go a long way in this business.

What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

Without a doubt selecting and putting together a band to play a headline show has been the best experience to date. Nothing beats connecting with my band on stage and using each other’s energy to play a great show.

Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring?

I love John Mayer and Paramore. Two totally different artists but their music just speaks for itself… so clever yet emotive!!

Are there any new projects in the pipeline?

I am currently recording my EP due for release in March. The first single will be released end of January. I will also be in Tamworth in January for the country music festival.

The music industry is constantly changing, where do you see yourself a few years?

I’d like to think I have been able to share my music and connect with people all over the world. Also hope to be better at social media promotion!

What is your favourite and least favourite part about this line of work and why?

My favourite is performing live with my band. There is no better feeling than putting on a great show! Self-promotion is my least favourite…I need to get better at this!

Name a few of your favourite Australian artists.

Missy Higgins, Kasey Chambers, Jimmy Barnes, Angus and Julia Stone, G Flip, Xavier Rudd, Crowded House, Hilltop Hoods, Spacey Jane, Tame Impala, Glass Animals.

The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye?

Social media has had a huge impact and it is one of my challenges. Music is getting released very quickly these days and I feel the pressure of having to pump out songs quickly however I really want to bring a little old school back by taking the time to record with live musicians. I hope to appeal to an audience who wants music that is vintage inspired with a contemporary twist.

How will you continue appealing to the international market?

My passion is to create music with real live musicians. My Ep is being recorded live in the studio as I hope to capture the energy and emotion in my songs by doing this. I feel there is a market to bring that live energy back into contemporary music.

Do you collaborate with others? Who is on your wish-list?

Absolutely YES. I was lucky enough to collaborate with some amazing songwriters at Blackbird Studios in Nashville TN when I was 16 years old, and this helped develop and broaden my song writing style. I think John Mayer and I would write a killer song!

What advice do you give for other artists wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Experience as many different parts of the music industry as possible from writing, recording, sound engineering, live performance….…take every opportunity and just have a go!

A message for your fans. How do you best interact and respond with your followers and fans?

I’m working on my social media skills and am looking forward to building my audience. Watch this space as there are some big projects in the works!

Any last words?

Thanks for checking out my music…hope to see you all one day soon!
