theaussieword catches up with Alex L’Estrange.
Tell us how it all started. What had you first interested in music?
There was always music around when I grew up. My mother is a classical pianist and my father is a hi-fi speaker designer. Was a weird mix.
What motivates or influences you in your quest to make great music?
I think mostly my environment. The people and the geography. I’m not a prolific artist, but when I need to write it’s pretty much do or die.
What are your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist?
To create music that resonates with someone else on a truly meaningful level.
Success, what is the secret to it?
I don’t think I’m successful enough to say!
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Probably having the opportunity to tour Australia this year with Holy Holy.
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring?
Sam Cromack is someone I look up to. But there are too many to name.
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now?
I really have no idea! Hopefully content.
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye?
With the Internet the delivery mechanism has changed. It provides more opportunity for new artists to gain a following – everyone can have a voice thanks to social media. But it also probably creates an over-saturated market. I’m sure a lot of real
ly great music gets streamed into the abyss these days.
Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists.
These Guy, Ball Park Music, Big Bad Echo, Kirin J Callinan, Daggy Man – I’ll cap it at five but I could go on.
What can we expect from you in the coming months? Any plans to tour?
My debut EP is out the 16th of December and I’m playing my own show in Fortitude Valley at Black Bear Lodge
on the 28th of January.
Tell us a bit about your latest record, how would you best describe your music? ‘Auchenflower’ is my first attempt at condensing my writing into some kind of releasable format. The six tracks are wildly different, but all kind of in the pop / indie / alternative realm. I wrote most of the songs in the Brisbane suburb of Auchenflower. The single ‘Nothing to Hide’ was written when a stranger let herself into my house and divulged her life story to me.
Do you have any new projects in the pipeline?
Just writing and recording new stuff, I’ve got lots of ideas floating around for release number 2. I also work as a producer currently getting my hands dirty with Mid Ayr and Tempura Nights.
