NEW MUSIC: Chris Pickering ‘Andalusia’

After two years of reclusive work since his last EP Corners, Melbourne-based songwriter-musician Chris Pickering releases Canyons, a new collection of original songs showcasing his inspired union of urbane, classic pop songwriting, and atmospheric desert-rock.

Co-produced with both Adrian Mauro, aka Machine Age, and Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes), and recorded in Joshua Tree, California, and Nashville, TN, the album features Pickering’s gift for melody and intriguing lyricism, like a Laurel Canyon sound for the 21st century, combined with swirling psychedelic pedal steel guitar and stratospheric keyboards, locked in with a driving rhythm section and majestic twangy guitars.

The album’s lead single, Canyons, was digitally released last year, and has since garnered airplay and a warm reception on radio (community stations and ABC Double J) around the country. The second single, Andalusia, features a chugging Britpop-laced rhythm section augmented by a spinning string section, with the lyrics describing unrequited love amongst the geometrical architecture and dry passion of southern Spain, before diving into its yearning nightingale chorus.

The album’s other tracks include the gentle Snowflake, the Nilsson-reminiscent desperation blues of Circles, the classic folk-pop sound of Trivia, the stark and haunting Broke My Own Heart, a McCartney turn on Oscillate, and the epic and expansive Other Weaknesses and The Wash.
