Exclusive Special Interview: Katy Steele

theaussieword.com meets with Katy Steele for a one on one exclusive blog interview.

What can you tell our readers about you? How and where did it all begin? I started a band called little birdy around the age of 19. We had three records and they all charted in the top ten and all achieved gold status.
What had you first interested in music? I was basically introduced to music via the womb so it was very natural for me to begin songwriting. Every single person in my family except my mum is a musician of some sorts. My dad rick steele is a blues singer, my older brother is in “empire of the sun” my twin brother goes under “Yarkhob”.

Who motivates or influences your quest to make great music? I have a very strong level of drive, so i suppose I push myself internally every day to get better and better. My move to NYC to pursue my solo career was one of many challenges I have put myself through. I don’t like a comfortable life. I like changes and things to be constantly moving and evolving. I’ve always been like that.
Do you have any planned tours coming up? I just finished an intimate club show tour of Australia.
What are some of your biggest goals you hope to accomplish as an artist? To be an inspiration to people. I just want to be an artist that people get excited by.
What can fans expect from you in the coming months? A video for my first song “fire me up”
Success, what is the secret to it and what has been your biggest career highlight so far? Probably receiving a platinum record is an amazing feat. But I think singing and performing with Paul Kelly on numerous occasions will always remain as my most memorable moments.
Which stars of the music industry do you find inspiring? My brother Luke Steele.
How would you best describe you and your music to your fans? I would say I’m a very honest person. My music is obviously also very honest and comes from a very internal place. I think my new solo material has a strength that I’ve found since being in NY. You can hear what I struggled with whilst writing, but you can also hear this positive under current. Just a new found sound.
What can you tell us about your latest album? Well it’s not out yet,but I think I covered that in the last answer 😉
Are there any new exciting projects in the works?
Yes, but I can’t tell you 😉
The music industry is huge, where do you see yourself a few years from now? See myself collaboarating and experimenting with loads more people. I also see myself writing and producing for other artists.
Name a few of your favourite Aussie artists. Paul Kelly, Easybeats, birthday party, nick cave
The shape of the music industry has changed significantly over the years, including the use of social media, how do you feel about the industry as a whole and what does it mean to you in getting your records out into the public eye? I really enjoy having such instantaneous contact with people via social networking. I think you have to be positive and realize that all these tools are actually really beneficial. My approach is to not take it all too seriously.

Thanks for the interview Katy!
