Described by GoldFlakePaint as ‘Sounding something like Wild Nothing had Jack Tatum grown-up within the grey concrete confines of a city only slowly finding its feet’, Kidsmoke are back with their first release since June 2015. Channelling their established sound into their upcoming self-released singles, the quartet are releasing ‘Cut Yourself Loose’ on the 26th February with a follow up due to arrive in April 2016. After having returned with a fresher, more focused sound and a second EP ‘So Long, Emptiness’ in April 2015, ‘Cut Yourself Loose’ looks to build on this and is the first single the band have released since. The artwork for the two singles was designed specifically by local artist Mike Payne. After being given the two tracks to listen to, Payne ran with his ideas. A theme of night and day emerged from his depiction of them, the perfection summation of the different feels and influences the tracks gave him. In ‘Cut Yourself Loose’, Guitar strums emerge from a watery synth into Kidsmoke’s statement twist on indie-pop, mixing their heritage and contemporary influences into the cocktail of sounds. Like adding burnt orange peel to a cosmopolitan, this track is the perfect complement to Kidsmokes’ existing discography. Continue reading New Music: Kidsmoke ‘Cut Yourself Loose’

Since releasing his first EP in mid-2015, Portal Bat (aka Christopher Loftis of Melbourne) has been juggling three different musical projects alongside his own as part of the homegrown label Breathlessness and beyond. The colourful and epileptic new video for the second single of the EP ‘Cerberus’ is the forerunner to the second Portal Bat EP in early 2016 and a full LP by summer. The video is a journey through a lucky dip of influences and imagery that inspired the structure and tones of Cerberus, including but not limited to video games, retro anime and kittens. This record is in every sense of the word a dream. It is a song that connects with you on an individual level as though it was written just for you. IF IT’S A DREAM is the third single from The Jason Singh Project, and once again affirms Jason’s commitment to the challenges of the project: writing, producing and releasing six new singles in 12 months. “We are at the half way point of the project and it’s been an amazing ride. I am so proud of the records and the way each one has turned out. I’ve pushed myself, and those around me, to new heights. Where I am at with the project the warmth and depth of a ballad seemed only fitting for the mid-way point.” Jason Singh was meant to write and sing this song; his flawless, smooth, dreamy vocals perfectly compliment the feel of this heartfelt ballad….. Great work Jason!
Saint Clair is streaming her debut single ‘Sailing’, released via Kieron McIntosh’s (Plan B, Paloma Faith) new Wunderkind imprint. Produced by Ben Jones and Raffertie (Ninja Tune) the lustrous, electronic-soul single finds the French-speaking Londoner mastering a slick distillation of classic song-writing sensibility and wholly contemporary influences including Son Lux and James Blake. A unique voice born out of a teenage discovery of classic standards (Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder) and more recently singing for Kwabs and Ghostpoet – Saint Clair now emerges on her own terms. And as the sparse handclaps of ‘Sailing’ give way to a shimmering chorus which unfurls beneath her multi-tracked vocal, you sense the presence of an artist inexorably on the rise.
